Egg Wars

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Lyndsay and I were assigned the task of making deviled eggs for my family’s Memorial Day get together. I decided we should spice it up a little and have a competition. This competition was not based on flavor, only on looks. G was our judge and had three categories to decide on: goo insertion (prettiness of the goo pile), paprika application, and overall beauty.

Before I reveal the results of our little contest (according to G) I thought I should let you all form your own opinion. Below are our eggs. When considering the eggs, be sure to judge based on all three categories!

So, what do you think?

G decided I had the best goo piles, while Lyndsay took the prize for paprika application and overall beauty. Do you agree?

Baby’s First Solid Food

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Okay, really it is “Baby’s First Breastmilk-With-Flakes-of-Rice-Cereal-And-In-No-Way-Solid Food.”

Anyway…

We decided that all the grabbing for our food and inability to eat a cheeseburger with J in our lap and not have him get a handful of ketchup was a sign he was ready. So, on Monday night we decided to try it out.

All in all I think it was a success. You can see from the photos that more came out of his mouth than got swallowed, but he got really into it and really seemed to like it. Between spoonfuls, he would kick his legs and flap his arms about, impatient for the next helping. And in the end, some techniques were discovered to help him actually eat this new soupy goo. (The main trick we discovered: keep the little spoon in his mouth with the goo for a moment so that he sucks on it and therefore swallows the goo.)

Since this session, we have had one more successful session, and one not-so-successful session. I know it will take time for all of us to get good at this new activity, and until then I need to learn to not cry when he doesn’t want it and therefore an ounce or two of my hard-earned breastmilk has been wasted.

By the way, G HATES this new activity. Can you say “Sticky Baby?” I keep trying to tell him it will only get worse from here and he should just get over it. I don’t think it is helping. So don’t be surprised when you see the toddler version of J being followed around by G holding a pack of wipes and a box of latex gloves, continuously wiping down J and changing his gloves while grimacing.

Enjoy the long weekend!

An ‘Adult’ Chicken

Friday, April 25th, 2008

This is the picture I got from G today of our dinner-in-progress, along with this message: “I think I used too much twine. Our chicken looks like its about to start in an S&M video…”
As my boss pointed out when I shared this story with her, the key element is missing for that. The chicken’s arms are tied in front on our chicken, not in the back like they should be!

Oh well, close enough. Happy Friday!
